Recent activity: Sunday, July 26, 2009 Traffic Restriction Orders Wincobank School, Newman Rd & Lydgate Lane Traffic calming & Waiting restrictions. CTC supports these proposals. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 Traffic Restriction Orders Bunch of TRO's relating to the Tudor Square refurbishment, tightening up parking and loading restrictions. CTC wrote to support these. Thursday, April 2, 2009 Bus Punctuality Improvement Plan The proposal covers a raft of measure to extend bus lanes on Bolsover St, Exchange Place, introduce a bus gate at Station Rd Woodhouse, and revoke an existing bus gate at Southey Hill (which was unpopular with residents apparently) replacing it with traffic calming. It is also proposed to exclude motorcycles from bus gates on Furnival Rd at Derek Dooley Way, Holme Lane to Langsett Rd at Hillsboro Corner, Infirmary Rd to Penistone Rd at Shalesmoor, London Rd at Asline Rd, & Shalesmoor. This is because DfT rules do not allow the council to lawfully sign bus gates for motorcycles.Shucks. CTC Response:- Thank you for your letter dated the 18th of March. We SUPPORT the measures at Bolsover St, Exchange Place/Park Square and Woodhouse terminus. We OBJECT to the removal of the Bus Gate at Southey Hill. This will increase motor traffic in the area and make it more dangerous for cyclists. Exclusion of motorcyclists. We are pleased to see that the Department for Transport has taken a more logical view on this issue than Sheffield City Council. However, as the council has previously made it known that motorcycles are allowed to use bus lanes even when there are no signs permitting them to do so, signs should now be erected specifically excluding them from these facilities.

Great family ride from Old Moor to Worsborough

[caption id="attachment_114" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Wosborough"][/caption] Seven 6-8 year olds on their own bikes, a wheelchair duet bike, childback tandem, 18 month old on a bike seat, a 3 year old in a trailer, a 12 and 14 year old on a visit from Bristol and numrous adults on a variety of solo bikes. Only one puncture and only 2 people who had a dip in the reservoir ... the kids enjoyed a break to watch some classic bike racing at Wombwell circuit and splashing through the puddles.

Eric and the Devil

Details of how to subscribe are here People who know me will be well aware of my yearly visits to the greatest free event of the world, the Tour de France". It is hard to explain the attraction to non believers but in the six or so days I am away from home I gain so many memories, here’s just a few from this year… As with anything planning is important, I try to get my yearly "fix" by visiting a sprint finish, time trial, and stage start, three connected but totally different experiences. Another must is a camping site at a stage town, so I can walk to the "race". As soon as the route was out I started planning and decided to make my base for is year at Cholet, From here I could travel the 40 or so miles to Nantes on Monday 7 July for the finish, returning to Cholet for the start and finish for the first time trial on Tuesday and then the stage depart again from Cholet on Wednesday before coming home. The ferry was soon booked and together with my travelling companion Jim, we set off at lunchtime Saturday 5 July, travelling to Portsmouth for the night ferry to St Malo, a route we’ve used before. An uneventful trip saw us arrive at the ferry terminal with enough time to visit the nearby dockside pub for a meal and refreshment at quite reasonable prices. I’d just finished eating when I saw 3 lads I knew from Manchester. I’ve seen them before on several "Tour trips" first meeting them in a bar in Charleville Mezieres, northern France in 2003 the night before the start in that town. Like me they were regular visitors and look for the same type of venue. A quick chat revealed that not only were they on the same ferry, Jim and I were booked into he adjacent seats on the ferry, not only that, they were also on the same campsite. Onto the ferry and a quick shower and change out of motorbike gear and watch the ship leave Portsmouth. A sight in itself as it passes the might of the Royal Navy at anchor. Many cyclists were also on board making their pilgrimage to locations in Brittany to see the race. Back inside and to the cabaret bar for a nightcap and hour or so of relaxation (is there a common theme surfacing about this trip?). The main act was a speciality magic duo that performed well. Things got a little rougher and with the ship rolling somewhat dramatically, the cabaret had to cancel the finale, which involved the magician being blindfolded while throwing knives at his pretty female assistant, pity really it might have been amusing… Anyhow enough beer was consumed and off to bed (or seat). Next morning was a beautiful day, back on the bikes, (powered type) and straight down to Cholet. We arrived at the campsite about 1pm, and everyone whose visited France knows the reception is shut between noon and 2pm. Oh well, we’ll just have to wait at the campsite bar…Time soon passes and we’re booked in and pitch tents then into town to see the lie of the land. Suprisingly the tourist office is open and maps for the route are picked up together with anything related to the T.D.F. (more of this later). Back to the campsite for evening meal and another visit to the bar where my pals from Manchester are ensconced. Soon its time for bed and another day is done. Up early Monday morning and get ready for the trip to Nantes, the weather isn’t looking good and Jim decided to meet me later if things fine up. I set off in sunlight but 15 miles down the road a typical French shower left me drenched, (should have put my one piece waterproof on) never mind I pressed on to Nantes eventually finding the race finish. The great thing about motorbikes is that you can get into places where other vehicles are not allowed and they are easy to park, in France, that means anywhere, parks, pavements, even in the reception area for the official tour vehicles. I made my way to the race finish and located my favoured spot, as close to the finish as possible, but with a good clear view of the big TV screen, which is erected. A trip to a local boulangerie for a sandwich, then a bar for as coffee before cementing my feet at the 50m from finish marks. You’ve got to be there early because the crowds are tremendous. The spectators are multinational; I was beside a rather nice lady called Coleen from Sydney, Australia. She was working in Europe, saw the race was in France and made her way to see it, she probably wouldn’t have the chance again and was not going to miss it. You’ve got to wait for several hours at the barriers, fending of latecomers but it always seems to pass quickly for me. The TV screen keeps you informed with live coverage, there are several local races for juniors/ youths etc down the last few kms to the official finish, a great treat for the kids. Then the caravanne, that’s got to be seen to be believed with their freebies and bits of junk, collected avidly by all. It isn’t long before all attention is given to the big screen as the race nears its climax for the day. The famous French commentator, Daniel Mangaeas, gives commentary and even though I can only pick every fifth word or so, he makes every second exciting. Soon the Klaxon sounds, the race is in the last kilometres and the only sound is Mr Mangaeas, his voice whips up into a crescendo as the leaders round the last bend and come into view, super fast speed, the peleton flashes past, the most amazing thing is the noise of 100 or so bikes travelling at 40mph, and the wind blast is like a mini hurricane. They’re past so look at the screen to see the stage winner, Romain Fellieu, a Frenchman, so there are cheers all around. [caption id="attachment_61" align="alignleft" width="400" caption="A close encounter with the Devil"][/caption] It is then time to make/barge your way and try to catch the presentation ceremony. If you’re lucky you make it, and when the music starts the cheers begin. Bernard Hinault, the presenter of the winners takes to the stage. This year I was present when he catapulted the protester from the podium, I’ll let you know that its about a ten foot drop the demonstrator had, then he was dragged away by angry gendarmes, no thoughts about human rights for him. The crowds disperse and its back to the campsite. Shower. Food and then exchange memories with friends old and new at the campsite bar. A great day was had. Next day, Tuesday was the individual time trial starting and finishing in Cholet so the action was day long. A walk into town and the starting ramp was soon found. Jim and I had a great spot on the barriers right on the ramp side. We viewed the first twenty or so riders to start then decided to explore the route. My Manchester mates had been out on their bikes the previous night and ridden the full route from start to finish and had given me the layout on a town plan. As we left the starting post, I bumped into one of the most famous "Tour" celebrities, The Devil". He was in full rig out and graciously posed for photos. A quick nip into a trackside bar for a beer and sandwich and We found the official "Ricard" French jazz band playing, a rep was giving away pernod too (hic), must learn how to say no!. We made our way eventually to the finishing area, crossing a footbridge where the route left the town and returned on the adjoining carriageway. The obligatory Tee shirts were bought (that’s seven I’ve got now, wifey goes mad every year, On the finishing kilometre an enterprising guy had opened his garage door, bought himself a keg of beer and was selling it for a couple of euros a glass. His wife was making crepes on a hotplate too. The queues were a testament to their quality. Jim said it was the best beer he tasted this trip. A couple we met on the campsite (Jonathan and Lynsey, from Peterborough) were ensconced at the 50 metre from the finish mark and we managed to wheedle our way in with them and we settled down to watch the finale. The last few riders were all in with a shout of the stage and it was exciting. I got a great photo of Eric Zabel as he passed. Schumacker won by 12 seconds from David Millar and took the yellow Jersey. That night a fantastic firework display entertained us as well as the usual glass of grog. Wednesday and another walk into town for the start of the stage. This is altogether a different experience, with the official signing on of the riders. Its easy to get up close while they warm up, My mate Lynsey had the knack of recognising all the Brits and they came for a chat with her. One little personal touch was when Eric Zabel’s wife came up with the family dog, he made a great fuss of the pooch, letting it lick his face, he must be human… Firstly the caravan leaves then an hour or so later the officials depart. The Start in town is a good place for photos too. I got one of all the leaders on the start line, yellow, polka, green and white as they waited for the official procession out of town. Soon all the "Tour" vehicles are gone so its back to the campsite, pack the tent, motorbike togs on and leave for the ferry port. A leisurely ride up the road to Oustreheim for the night ferry. We had enough time to stop at Café Gondree / Pegasus Bridge, famous for the action on D-Day during the war. Quite moving it was too before the last night of the trip travelling by Ship to Portsmouth. I apologise if I’ve been a bit long winded with the account but it’s a fantastic event to be part of.. The people I meet, the carnival atmosphere, the closeness to the action, the whole experience is not to be missed. Ask Jim, he came once with me and now it’s his third visit and we’re waiting for the next route to make our plans for the next visit. PS. Just for the record, all the hats, gifts and memorabilia I collect from "Le Tour" are quickly put up for auction on e-bay on my return home, this year I realised just short of £100 which pays for my ferry fare. See you there next year.???

Routes for the Phil and Friends rides

The Phil and Friends rides take place every August starting from Stannington in NW Sheffield. They are run as fund raising events for the CTC and take in roads familiar to Phil Liggett from stages on the Milk Race and Tour of Britain. There is a 100km and a 150km route. Both routes take in the climb of Holm Moss and are hilly. The 150km route also includes the climb through the Winnatts Pass, a short twisty 20% climb which doesn't feel that short when you are climbing into the almost inevitable headwind. The South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire region is known for it's hilly terrain to the west. This ride from Kirk Sandall Station in the east of the region is 61 miles long and uses quiet roads and a section of canal towpath, and it's flat! Kirk Sandall is served by Northern Trains from Doncaster and Sheffield. Cycles are carried. Theoretically there is a maximum of 2 bike per train, but this is generally ignored. Sheen Hostel Weekend

Details of how to subscribe are here When this hostelling weekend was first mooted as a club event, I knew immediately that it was not for me. Accommodation was referred to as a bunkhouse, which undoubtedly would involve bedding down on a bale of straw, in a cold, draughty barn without so much as a power point in which to plug my hairdryer. However, when we undertook a club ride which came within a few miles of Sheen, Mark, who was organising the weekend event, suggested a detour to go through the village, to allow me the opportunity to assess the accommodation. We came to a halt beside a neat, gravelled driveway leading to a modernised, cosy-looking farmhouse, alongside of which was a converted farm out- building. As I peered through the window of the out-building, a pleasant woman came out of the farmhouse, and when given an explanation as to my curiosity, took me inside to look around. It was a revelation. There was a large, modern, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge, a dormitory with three bunk beds which most importantly had a double en-suite shower facility, with sparkling white tiles and shiny chrome. There was, apparently, a larger dormitory above, accessed by some concrete steps on the outside of the building. The only down side was that the two dormitories had to share use of the two showers. Having had my main concern regarding the accommodation dispelled, I really felt that I ought to support Mark’s initiative in his effort to introduce some more diverse activities into the club repertoire. However, hostelling is an activity I haven’t undertaken for some considerable years and it was, therefore, with great trepidation and after considerable reassurance, that I opted to be included. I knew from past experience that luggage had to be kept to a minimum and began by packing the absolute essentials. So once the hairdryer, hair straighteners, toilet bag and a pack of playing cards were in the pannier, it was on to less important items. The great imponderable at this time of year is how warm the accommodation would be, so being ultra cautious; I took two pairs of pyjamas, one skimpy, and one thermal. The bath towel was, perhaps, over indulgent and took up a lot of space in the pannier, but I decided that it would be useful going to and from that shared shower facility. The biggest mistake was losing my nerve at the last moment and throwing in a hot water bottle. The prospect of settled weather for the weekend was high and when Sioned found a ten pound note on the ground alongside our bikes as we prepared to start our journey from Millhouses Park, the omens were good for a lucky weekend. How wrong we were! On reaching the village of Foolow, I was well behind the rest of the group, struggling to keep up with the pace because of the enormous weight of luggage I was carrying. As I rounded a bend in the road, I was greeted by the bizarre sight of Jill riding her bike erratically on the wrong side of the road. I couldn’t understand what was happening, until, rounding the next bend, I saw a large, nervous-looking cow lumbering down the right hand side of the road, closely followed by Jill, weaving about, trying to herd the animal by bicycle. We all joined in attempting to get the beast off the road where it was going to prove a danger to itself and motorists. Mainly by dint of Jill’s herding technique, the cow was cornered in front of a garage, where she gazed at us belligerently for bringing her bid for freedom to an end. We then had the problem of what to do next. I walked up the long path of the nearest house to try and find someone who could contact the owner of the animal. There was no reply and as I turned to retrace my steps, it was just in time to see the cow evade her captors and make a dash for it, heading in the direction from which she had come. Jill and I were really concerned about her and pedalled further along the road to try and find someone who could help to resolve the crisis. In the yard of the next farm, we saw what we took to be the old farmer, with his back to us, vigorously sweeping up leaves and called him over. As he approached, we realised this was no grizzled, old farmer, but a very handsome young man, with Hollywood good looks, and eyelashes that could have swept up the leaves without need of a brush. When he responded to our call, it was in a very attractive eastern European accent – he was obviously a migrant worker. As he gazed at us with his deep blue eyes, we stuttered something incoherent, simpered foolishly and each pointed in opposite directions, having forgotten totally which way the bovine miscreant had blundered off, or indeed, what we had stopped to ask in the first place. At this point, we decided we would have to leave the cow to her own fate and backed out of the farmyard slowly, giggling like schoolgirls and rejoined our companions. The group cycled onwards to Tideswell, where we had an early lunch and then traversed the hilly terrain towards Longnor, where we planned to have an afternoon break for tea and cakes at the Craft Centre. I was, of course, trailing at the back, seriously considering jettisoning the hot water bottle as ballast, when I came upon Joan standing by her bike and scrutinising the back tyre. It was looking fairly flat, but Joan thought that she could manage to ride the short distance to the cafe, and asked me to go ahead to warn husband Dennis that instead of settling inside the cafe, he would need to wait outside ready to change the inner tube. I arrived at the cafe and gave Dennis the bad news. Having arrived in Longnor, we were within easy reach of Sheen, except that Mark had factored in a fifteen mile arduous loop to take in the Morridge Ridge. Allowing just enough time for Dennis to wash the grease and grime from his hands after repairing the puncture and to drink a hasty cup of tea, we cycled out of Longnor and ascended the long climb onto the Morridge Ridge. Once on the ridge, the glorious scenery compensated for the effort and we stopped to gaze across the panorama of pastoral beauty, the early autumnal colours stretching into the distance under a perfect, bright blue sky. As we cycled along the ridge, a gentle breeze sent crisp, brown leaves skittering along the road ahead of us. As we descended from the ridge, again I was quite some distance behind the group and rounded a bend to find Dennis and Joan at the side of the road examining another very flat rear tyre on Joan’s bike. I offered to go ahead, find the rest of the group and inform them of the problem. They were congregated at the bottom of the hill and, feeling like the Angel of Doom, I was yet again the bearer of bad tidings. We stood about in the late afternoon sunshine, until our intrepid pair appeared, certain, that if there had been a problem with the previous change of inner tube, it was now resolved. We completed the day’s journey of 47 miles by wearily climbing one last steep hill into the village of Sheen. [caption id="attachment_139" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Sheen Youth Hostel"][/caption] Our arrival at the hostel was observed by a bevy of curious cats belonging to the farmhouse, as their owner, the woman I had met previously, came out to welcome us and tell us where to store the bikes. Mark had planned that however the ratio of male to female group members worked out, it was obvious that the higher number would be accommodated in the larger dormitory on the upper floor and that, unusually for a cycle club event, was the female contingent. But poor Mark had not accounted for the female assessment as to the suitability of that accommodation. The smaller dormitory was on the ground floor, light, warm and cosy and, most importantly adjacent to the shower room, whereas, the upper room was a bit dismal and worst of all necessitated coming down some outside stone steps to gain access to the showers. It was no contest. I emptied the contents of my pannier bags onto one of the lower bunks in the small dormitory and backed up by the other ladies we shooed Dennis and Mark out into the cold and up the stone steps to the austerity of the upstairs room. It was like a scene from Dickens! Showered and restored, we, in the female dormitory, each chose to spend the time before going to the local pub for dinner in different ways. Sioned lay on her top bunk and relaxed; Joan did a Sudoku puzzle, whispering numbers to herself like an incantation; I sorted out my myriad belongings into heaps in an effort to assess where it had all gone wrong and Jill sat cross-legged on her top bunk tapping maniacally into her BlackBerry (or as Joan mistakenly called it, her Blueberry). I was just thankful that there was no mobile phone signal obtainable as Jill’s Duffy ring tone has to be the worst one ever! We had an excellent meal in the pub that evening, the food was home cooked by the landlady and was definitely of superior quality to most pub grub. We were joined there by Tony and Madelaine, who, because of work commitments, had started the bike ride from Sheffield much later than the main group. We had all forgotten about the ten pound note that Sioned had found on the ground that morning as we started on this venture, until she now bought a round of drinks with it, much to the general acclamation of our little group of diners. On arrival back at the hostel, I went into the shower room to clean my teeth and was greeted by the sight of the most enormous spider lurking malevolently in the corner of the shower. My shrieks brought Sioned into the room. She calmly ushered me out whilst she dealt with the situation. When I returned and enquired if the creature was dead, she looked shocked and said that the spider was now out of sight enclosed in a toilet roll tube behind the toilet. “But why haven’t you squashed it?” I queried incredulously. “I’m vegetarian,” was the reply. “I only wanted you to kill it, not eat it!” I protested. There was no way I could go to the toilet knowing that something so horrendous was lurking less than a hairy leg length (the spider’s, not mine) away. I rushed back into the dormitory to find someone of a less sensitive disposition and Joan volunteered to sort it out. She closed the shower room door behind her and we heard what sounded like two falls and a submission and then Joan reappeared, red in the face, but triumphant. The bathroom was thankfully no longer a no go area. The following morning we had to bid farewell to Sioned, who, because of work commitments had to return home. We would miss her cheery disposition and the ten quid drinks round! The good news for this middle day of the three was that we did not have to carry our luggage, which was a particular relief to me, though once we started out it was apparent that I was still the slowest in the group. This meant that as I crested a hill I was the one, yet again, to discover Dennis and Joan preparing to fix a puncture of the same back wheel on Joan’s bike. Dennis was getting paranoid. On each occasion he had carefully checked the inside of the tyre to ensure that there was nothing stuck in the tyre that was causing this recurrent problem, but had found nothing. He wearily searched for his tool kit whilst the Angel of Doom rode off to deliver her well rehearsed message. As we regrouped when the puncture was mended, Mark decided that it would be a good idea to miss out the planned morning coffee break and push onwards for an early lunch as the planned ride was about 60 miles and we had already lost valuable time. However, there was rebellion in the ranks regarding the need for a caffeine fix and he reluctantly agreed for us to stop in Ashbourne. The next stage of our journey from Ashbourne, brought a huge deviation from the normal pattern of events, this time, Dennis had a puncture! It really made quite a pleasant change for him to be changing the inner tube of his own bike. Whilst he and Joan adopted their usual stance over yet another up-ended bike, aided by Tony and Madelaine, they urged the rest of us to head for the cafe in Hatton where we intended having lunch. Jill and I were unanimous in our refusal to go, protesting that lunch was of little importance to us compared with supporting our fellow riders. Until, that is, someone mentioned those three magic words - cafe – closes – 2 p.m. We did wrestle with our consciences for about a nanosecond before we sped off down the road. In the warmth of the cafe, concern for The Puncture Repair Outfit almost suppressed our appetites – we really had to force down a bun and a second cup of tea after the meal. Luckily, the Puncture Repair Outfit arrived at the cafe minutes before closing time. After lunch, Mark led his stalwart little band of riders into the town of Tutbury and up a steep hill to enable us to view the castle which seemed to comprise several piles of stones atop a grassy mound. The whole hillside was demarcated by a low wooden fence, to one side of which was a glass payment booth. We didn’t want to go inside the fence, but thought the castle would make a nice backdrop for a group photograph. As we huddled together to pose with our bikes, the woman in the glass booth knocked on the window of her booth and Joan went over to her. “You can’t take photographs there,” she growled. Joan protested that we were on a public road, not in the castle grounds. The woman, who made Victor Meldrew seem cheerful, pointed to a notice on the booth which stated ‘No Commercial Photos’. “It’s not a commercial photo,” Joan protested. The response was still in the negative. “People sell photographs like that on EBay,” she responded aggressively. We took the photograph anyway as she glowered at us from her glass box. Dennis and Joan have subsequently been thinking of booking on a Caribbean cruise. The rest of us are suspicious that they have been trading in that highly sought-after commodity – a picture of Sheffield CTC outside Tutbury Castle! [caption id="attachment_138" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Mr Fixit"][/caption] Two miles down the road, Joan got her comeuppance for challenging authority; she had her fourth puncture of the weekend! Dennis wearily took out his cloth roll of tools, by now a mere bundle of rags from over usage, and set about his task. Jill and I were unanimous in our wish to stay and support our companions. However, dusk was falling and it was a long way back to the hostel. Tony and Madelaine again volunteered their services and as they had a map of the area, Mark felt able to leave them to it and to lead Jill and I back along the Manifold Valley cycle trail and up the long hill into Sheen, arriving at the hostel as darkness fell. We did think about the Puncture Repair Outfit as we luxuriated in the hot showers, without having to rush, as there were only the two of us. Luckily, there were no spiders in the shower on this particular evening; otherwise, I don’t know how we would have coped! When the Puncture Repair Outfit eventually returned, cold and tired, they reported that they had at last found the cause of the problem. They had inflated the damaged inner tube and located the site of a tiny hole. When they had checked this in relation to the tyre, they had found a minute thorn, embedded in the tyre, undetectable to the touch, which was obviously piercing the inner tube when there was any weight on the back wheel. So, we could all sleep that night, knowing that our journey home the following morning would not be marred by punctures. After breakfast, we packed up our belongings and I staggered outside carrying my two weighty pannier bags, to be greeted by a sight I just could not believe – Dennis sitting on a low wall, with the wheel off his bike, mending a puncture!! He had discovered the flat tyre when he went out to prepare his bike for departure. Our weekend away had certainly been punctuated by punctures. We all agreed that the most direct route back to Sheffield would be preferable because of the later than anticipated start and not wishing to risk any further problems. We did have a brief cafe stop in Hassop, where, as he downed a large piece of cake, Dennis estimated that he had burned 7,000 calories during the course of the weekend, unfortunately 5,000 of those were expended in mending punctures! I arrived home earlier than anticipated, knowing that my husband, Ray, would still be at the Wednesday v. United game, so this meant that I would be able to have a quiet lunch, read the Sunday paper and then soak in a hot bath. As with the weekend away, it didn’t quite go to plan. I stepped through the door to be greeted by the noise of the football commentary emanating loudly from the television, as my stepson; unable to get to the match, had come to watch it on Sky T.V! Oh, if only someone could cast a spell to puncture that football and bring the game to a halt so that I could have a bit of peace and quiet. Dennis...... Joan......

She Who Dares Wins

This article will appear in issue 56 of the club magazine, out in September 2009. Details of how to subscribe are here The Sunday before Christmas, it is traditional for Barnsley Road Cycling Club to have a cycle ride to Holmfirth. There is a good pub there, colloquially known as ‘the Nook’ which has a roaring log fire. The main reason for this choice of venue is that Barnsley to Holmfirth is a fairly short run, therefore allowing maximum time for beer consumption, an important consideration during the festive season, amongst the prime athletes with whom I cycled. Following a move to Sheffield, I nevertheless continued the tradition of cycling to Holmfirth and meeting up with my former club mates in ‘The Nook’ for the pre-Christmas social event. On the second occasion of undertaking this solo journey, there was a slight drizzle of rain as I left home, which, by the time I had reached The Flouch and was traversing high almost deserted hill country, had become a heavy snowfall. It vaguely crossed my mind that perhaps I aught to turn back, particularly when I saw cars skidding and sliding around on the treacherous road surface, but the Holmfirth run was an important tradition, not to be abandoned lightly, so I carried on with my epic journey. The snow continued to fall steadily and the isolated country roads gradually became bereft of traffic. The scenery was magnificent, dark trees standing starkly outlined against white snow covered fields. It was a spectacular and magical scene and I felt exhilarated cycling along in splendid isolation. (Photo of Hills above Holmfirth by Sue Asbury) The last two miles into Holmfirth from Sheffield are down an extremely steep road, which I was not relishing negotiating. However the matter was decided for me when suddenly, in a split second, the bike slid to one side and I hit the road with a resounding wallop, banging my head and my right hip. Luckily, I was wearing a helmet, but nevertheless, there was a blinding flash, followed by a headache and I had to sit down where I landed in the snow, for a few minutes to try and recover. I then limped the two miles down to the pub, sopping wet and desperately cold. On arrival, I went straight to the room with the log fire where we usually congregated, expecting to be greeted by the usual cheerful banter. The room was quite full, but there were no cyclists apparent. Shivering, I headed straight to the fire place and standing in front of the roaring flames prepared to start removing my wet outer garments. Firstly my cycling glasses came off, then the helmet, followed by my balaclava and waterproof jacket. At this stage, the assembled locals in there for their Sunday lunchtime pint were looking on with interest. “What layer are you planning to strip down to?” asked one, as I seductively pulled off a pair of sodden overshoes, followed by my shoes and socks. As I pulled off my sweater, another bloke said, “It’s like watching someone peel an onion. I thought you were about fifteen stones when you came in!” As the tabard came off, another chap called through to his mate in the public bar, “If tha wants to come in ‘ere Pete tha’s got to pay. ‘T’ stripper’s on!” I didn’t care about the comments; I was so cold and wet! After divesting myself of about three layers of clothing, but just about remaining decent and having warmed up a little, I went in search of my erstwhile cycling pals. I found four of the more junior club members in another room; no one else had made the journey in such inclement weather. I returned to the room with the fire and the convivial company in there. As the snow continued to fall unabated, it became increasingly apparent that it would be impossible to get back to Sheffield by bike. I telephoned my husband, Ray who confirmed that weather conditions were appalling and that he would drive over to Holmfirth to pick me up. Relaxing at the prospect of a nice warm car journey home, I downed a second glass of cider, went and gloated to the young cyclists in the other room about having a lift home and then went back to the fireside, curled up on the seat and spent a pleasant couple of hours awaiting Ray’s arrival. Just before closing time, the telephone behind the bar rang and I was taken aback, hearing my name being called. Ray had spent an hour and a half trying to get to Holmfirth and had only covered three miles – both possible routes from Sheffield were impassable. He had had to return home. Ray suggested that the only option was for me to try and cycle to Barnsley with the others, go to my mother’s house and await him coming over to collect me when the snow had thawed a little and the roads were passable. The subsequent journey was one of the worst I have ever undertaken. I was with two young male cyclists, the other two having left earlier. On the initial long , steady climb out of Holmfirth, the road was deep in slush and the passing cars were spraying us with freezing cold, slushy snow. As we descended into the area around Denby Dale, dusk fell, the temperature dropped about ten degrees and roads turned icy. It became impossible to ride and we all dismounted. Darkness found us trudging alone a lonely, totally unlit and uninhabited road. It was one of those situations rather like being in the middle of a nightmare, where you hope to waken up and escape, but instead it goes on and on. I was plodding along behind the other two with increasing difficulty, because my hip had stiffened up from my fall from the bike earlier in the day. I knew that I could not possibly walk all the way to Barnsley, but I had tried to ride the bike again and had slid on the ice, so that was not an option and I could also feel that I was getting hypothermic. We occasionally passed an isolated farmhouse, but they had huge dogs growling and barking in the yard, so we dare not approach to seek help. We eventually reached a main road and a little further along, there was a turning for a village. I told the lads I couldn’t continue walking any longer and that they should carry on whilst I took the turning to seek sanctuary in the village. When I reached the little cluster of houses, I gazed around and wondered what on earth I was going to do now. The pub was closed, there was no one out and about on such a dreadful night, if I phoned for a taxi, it wouldn’t be able to reach me and I was now completely alone! I was standing on the street corner, shivering, with tears of self pity trickling down my cheeks and turning to ice on my chin and wondering what to do next, when two little bicycle lamps quivered weakly through the darkness. My two young friends had reappeared, having ascertained that further down the main road, the surface was not too icy and therefore it was possible to negotiate it by bike. Eventually, after a journey of fifteen miles, taking five hours to complete, I turned up on my mother’s doorstep exhausted, stiff and so hypothermic I could hardly move. I had to be thawed out gradually in front of the fire and was then able to take off all my soaking garments, have a hot bath and get dressed again in borrowed clothes. When the rest of the club heard of my exploits at a later stage, I was presented with a certificate on which was transcribed the legend ‘She Who Dares Wins.” The framed certificate now has pride of place on our lavatory wall. Shropshire Bunkhouse Weekend 2010

Sheffield CTC are arranging a weekend tour to Much Wenlock in Shropshire for the weekend Friday 14th to Sunday 16th May 2010. There are vacancies for 17 males and 10 females and the cost per person will be £50. The cost includes duvet hire, two nights accommodation and dependent on the number of bookings, a modest meal on arrival Friday, as well as breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is intended to visit a local Pub Saturday evening for a meal which is not included in the price. Hybrid cars may include fake vroom for safety

The New York Times reports today on a development of interest to cyclists. Hybrid and electric cars produce less local air pollution and they are also quieter. This second effect is not necessarily a good thing if you are relying on your hearing to know if there is a car behind you. Apparently, however, manufacturers like Toyota and BMW are working on developing systems that broadcast an especially generated noise to alert others of the car's presence. More here

September Planning Applications The council has submitted 2 new planning apps: one is for an extension to the Chapeltown Greenway - this will take it as far as the Yalta industrial Estate which is in Chapeltown: A future extension will link it to the TPT at NCN/TPT at Cart Road early next year, subject to a funding bid recently submitted. The route will be bituminized as well. This is great news for Chapeltown residents who will have a route free of motor traffic all the way to Meadowhall. In particular it will avoid the nasty hill between Chapeltown and Ecclesfield. The other one is for an "iconic" bridge over the Parkway near Tinsley Golf Course. This will remedy the shameful current situation where pedestrians, cyclists and horse-riders are supposed to cross the 70 mph Sheffield Parkway at surface level. Traffic Regulation Orders Glossop Rd: Extend tram gate as far as Cavendish St. Operating 4-6:30 p.m. We support this, although there are concerns about the impact on cyclists using the Portobello cycle route, as traffic will be diverted across it. Parson Cross Child Safety Zone We Support this, however we would like to see the implementation of CSZ's accelerated by bringing in 20mph zones without waiting for infrastructure improvements.

A wet and windy ride around Derwent and Ladybower was almost an all female affair (apart from our photographer Dev). Men have their uses………………….. Hillsborough Corner Experiment

Simon has had notification of the Experimental Traffic Order that amends the hours of operation of the bus and tram gates on Middlewood Rd from 0700 to 1900 daily to 0700-1100 and 1500-1900 on Monday to Saturday inclusive. As it is experimental it will be in force for six months and the City Council will be considering whether the provisions of the Experimental Order should be continued in force indefinitely. Simon's view is that the hours that the bus gate will operate for cover a large part of the working day and it might not be as bad as we feared. There is an opportunity to make representations during the six month experimental period. He has previously made representations to the Council about the difficulties faced by cyclists negotiating the tram tracks at this busy and complicated junction and remedial work had been promised for this year. We are still waiting to see action on this. Update Sheffield CTC have been in touch with Andy Wild, Principal Transport Planner at Sheffield City Council to raise concerns about the risk that this difficult to negotiate junction for cyclists will become more difficult if the added complexity of the opening hours leads to more motorists using the junction in the hours when it should be open to cyclists and public transport only. Apparently this concern was also raised by the bus companies and so is likely to be factored into the decision on the opening hours. Simon has also been consulted on two other proposals Lydgate Lane and Monteney Crescent - Basically traffic calming around Lydgate Infant & Middle School Meadow Street Revised Permit Parking Scheme - Adjustments to the existing parking permit scheme. Join us at Manchester Velodrome and experience the excitement of the track for yourself. Our first ever visit to the track in May 2009 was a great success. There has been so much interest that we have arranged another session. Demand is high so book early! The cost is £20 (including bike hire). £10.50 if you have your own track bike. This price includes track hire exclusively for our group and a Manchester Velodrome accredited coach. It’s a taster session, so please do not be put off if you have never ridden on the track before. It’s open to anyone who can ride a bike but the minimum age is 9 years. The coach will talk through track safety at the beginning of the session and is always on hand to offer support and encouragement. Once you get used to the bike you’ll be ready to take part in our very own team pursuit or time trial! All hire bikes are fitted with Look Delta type cleats. You can hire shoes for £4.00 per session (pay at reception on arrival). Please do not bring SPDs, as you will not be able to use them but adaptors with toe clips are available if you want to wear your own shoes. Don’t forget your helmet and gloves. Water/cold drinks vending machine is available but the cafeteria will be closed so bring your own refreshments. Spectators/supporters are very welcome. There is no admission charge. You need to make your own travel arrangements to the velodrome but I suggest meeting at reception about 45 minutes before the session starts to collect hire bikes and shoes and change into your cycling clothes. For many years the Sheffield CTC group has been the largest in the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire area. At the AGM it was decided that the Sheffield Committee should be asked to take over the responsibilities for the CTC membership in the area. This will be put to an Extraordinary General Meeting of the the Sheffield Group to be held at the Fat Cat Inn on Thursday 18th March 2010. The most likely name for the group will be 'Sheffield and District CTC' althouggh this will be confirmed at the meeting. If this is the case, the web address will change to www.sheffieldCTC.org

The hunt for Cafe of the Year

Yes. The hunt for the SYNDDA Cafe of the Year is now open. We want CTC members to vote for three cafes, where 1 is your first choice and 3 your third choice. The cafes must be within a day’s cycling of this area. Don’t forget to include the full name of the café and the name of the town or village. If you have a paper form and want to risk the post, you will already know where to send it. Otherwise, please email your votes to cafe@syndda.org Entries close on 31 December. To vote we only need the names of the cafes. However this year we are using the competition to help improve the 'visitors' section of the website. If you have the time, please include a few words in the email about what you like about the cafes you are voting for. This will be gathered together to produce a SYNDDA recommended cafes page in the new year.

Mervyn Smith's Funeral‏

Mervyn Smith, a long-time contributor and member of the Cycle Forum, died recently of leukaemia. The funeral is on Monday 21st Dec at Hutcliffe Wood crematorium at 3 pm, followed by a 'wake' at the Nether Edge Hotel on Montgomery Road, just opposite the end of Kenbourne Road. There is plenty of parking (for bikes as well as cars) at the rear of the hotel.

The idea behind this global website is that cyclists can log instances of motorists blocking bike lanes and advanced stop lines and that it creates a record so that the site can be used to illustrate the scale of the problem to the enforcement authorities. Currently there is only one active poster in Sheffield, but they have assembled about a dozen photos. The Sheffield site is here If you decide to join in please be aware that some motorists may not take kindly to you taking photographs of them breaking the law, so be careful and think of your personal safety at all times.

Cycle Sheffield Bike Film Night at the Showroom

Monday 22 Feb is your chance to see the rarely screened, 1979, Oscar-winning Breaking Away; a coming-of-age and cycling full feature movie Rated in the top 10 sporting movies of all time, read the reviews on the web (for example here) and then get to this screening to enjoy the story and the cycling action. Shorts include Fixed in the City - a 'Tokyo Fixie Crew Motion Picture Mixtape' and others to be confirmed. Concessions on production of a CTC or CycleSheffield membership card. Cycle Sheffield are putting this night on because the response to a bike film night last June in Bike Week was great - they want to see if two nights a year is about right. So get on your bike and pedal along to enjoy the films, chat with other cyclists and give us some feedback and suggestions for movies to do with cycling that you think we would or should all want to see. Next Bike Film Night will be Monday Jun 14 2010 during Bike Week.

In another promising sign for Sheffield as a cycling city, commuters in Sheffield are to be encouraged to give up the car for the bike – and not to worry about the hills - reports the Sheffield Telegraph. The city has been chosen as the first in the UK to run 'BikeBoost', a two-year programme offering bike loans and a support programme to 800 cyclists. In exchange for the chance to try out cycling for free, participants undertake to cycle to work for at least 50% of the days in the challenge period of three to four weeks. More here
