SILKSTONE COMMON GRADE 2
28 March 2026 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
Courtside Cafe, Hillsborough Park
Silkstone Common/Old Stables (Grade 2)
Starts: 9.30 Courtside Cafe Hillsborough Park
Leader: Tom Monaghan 07946 608898 (with Les Sturch)
Courtside Cafe in Hillsborough for a change, but also to attempt to reduce the Park Run weaving. Taking the A61 cycle path towards Herries Road, through Parson Cross up to Grenoside, where we will deviate from the Sheffield CTC groove in the road to Wortley by entering Greno Woods on the newly re-surfaced NCN 67 route taking us towards Burncross. We’ll snake through High Green to keep off the busy road, head towards Howden, Stainborough and onto the flat NCN 62 railway line for a cafe stop at The Old Stables Coffee Shop (nice cakes) at 14 miles. From here we head to Hood Green on the toughest section of climb, 14.2% but short and such a beautiful area you will never notice you are climbing. I believe this is part of the area The Guardian described as The Tuscany of the North. A bit more up to Wortley and then we’ll drop down Finkle Street (beware of the surface here, it’s fine with care). Then the NCN 627 (Plankgate) which should be fine in Spring, but for anyone who prefers not to take this section you are free to take the main road from Deepcar to Oughtibridge to meet up for the Upper Don Trail through Beeley Wood to finish at Hillsborough Park.
With ascent of around 640m this route is Grade 2 (but only 27ml) at a very gentle pace to keep it inclusive. I would recommend mudguards and tyres of at least 28mm for the off tarmac cycle paths. Not technical but might be grotty if wet.

This a little celebration ride as I go down memory lane. In 2020 I bought a bike to take up cycling as a hobby, only occasional commuting cycling before. In the first year I could only manage about 15 miles then gradually increased this up to 50 miles by 2022. But for all 3yrs, all my rides were on off road trails NEVER on the road. This ride is a medley of some of the local trails I rode, some linked together with short road sections.
All good celebrations need a memento so I will give out a Peak Audax style cloth badge to all riders at the lunch stop. Many thanks to Paul Ward who has done an excellent job in creating this badge. Paul runs his own creative design business.
Most of the ride is off road, mainly on good quality packed surfaces and a little on tarmac. A gravel bike is best if you have one but a road bike should be ok.
We head out from Meadow Head to Coal Aston and Middle Handley to join the TPT at Staveley and then travel along the mashup of old railway line trackbeds: Midlands Railway, 5 Pits Trail, Silverhill Trail, Teversal Trail, Rowthorne Trail, Archaeological Way and Clowne Branch Line. Trackbeds were built for trains and so very rarely exceed 3% gradient, 5 Pits Trail being the exception of course! Sadly, in places bridges have been knocked down causing the trail to have a steep descent and after crossing the gap a steep ascent back onto the trackbed. Warning sometimes, if you are not in your low gear when you start the descent you may have to walk up the ascent because of being in the wrong gear.
Lunch will be at Teversal visitor centre (35K) with an ice cream/coffee/toilet stop at Rother Valley Country Park (73K)
Distance wise this is right at the grade 2 upper limit but for Sheffield area it is comparatively very low on the climbing front. I will be taking it at a gentle pace because a lot of the ride is on shared access paths where we have to be slow and courteous to walkers/horse riders. As the ride name suggests a relaxed, enjoyable ride as we Pootle along. Hopefully basked in glorious sunshine!
Please note, we start at Meadow Head but finish at Castle Gate in the town centre. I will assist anybody who needs help getting home at the end.
Also I would politely ask, please don't use flashing lights within the group out of respect for others.
54 miles (88 km) 2,746ft (837 m) of ascent.
